The most famous Hi-Lo versions are Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better and Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better.

What is Hi-Lo Poker?

The expression Hi-Lo, i.e. High-Low, refers to poker games in which the showdown prize can be shared between the strongest and lowest qualified combination. In the most common format, half of the pot goes to the best high hand, while the other half goes to the best low hand. If no player has a qualified low hand, the best high hand wins the entire pot.

The high part is evaluated according to the standard poker order of combinations: royal flush, straight flush, poker, full house, flush, straight, threes, two pair, one pair and high card. In the low part, the rules are different. In the most common "8 or Better" system, the player must draw five different cards from the eight down.

Ace in low combination counts as the lowest card. That's why A-2-3-4-5 is the best possible low hand. Straight and flush do not reduce the value of the low combination, so A-2-3-4-5 of the same suit still represents an excellent low hand.

How is the best low hand determined?

The easiest way to compare two low hands is to order their cards from highest to lowest. The comparison starts from the highest card. A lower high card means a better low hand.

For example:

  • 7-5-4-3-2 is a better low hand than 8-4-3-2-A, because the seven is lower than the eight.
  • 7-6-3-2-A is better than 7-6-4-2-A, because the first two highest cards are equal, so the following decides: the three is lower than the four.
  • A-2-3-4-5, known as the "wheel", is the best possible low hand in the Ace-to-Five system.

What does the "8 or Better" rule mean?

The "8 or Better" designation means that the highest card in a qualified low five cannot be higher than an eight. In addition, all five cards must be different. The PokerStars rules for Omaha Hi-Lo and Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo use this very criterion.

The combination 8-7-6-4-2 can qualify for low.

The combination 9-5-4-3-2 cannot, because it contains a nine.

The combination 8-7-6-6-A is also not valid as a low five because it contains a pair of sixes.

Therefore, not every pot is guaranteed to be dealt. If the community cards or the player's cards do not allow a valid low hand, the entire pot belongs to the best high hand.

The most famous Hi-Lo versions of poker

Although the name Hi-Lo can be used for a variety of split-pot games, several variants stand out for their clearly defined rules and wide representation.

Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better - the most famous version

For most players exploring Hi-Lo poker rules for the first time, Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better is the most important version to understand.

Each player receives four private cards, and five community cards are opened on the table. As in classic Omaha, the final hand must use exactly two private cards and exactly three communities. It is not allowed to use one, three or four private tickets.

The game has four standard betting phases:

  1. Pre-flop – players are dealt four private cards.
  2. Flop – the first three community cards are revealed.
  3. Turn – a fourth community card is added.
  4. River – the fifth and final community card is revealed.

The special feature is that the player does not have to use the same two private cards for the high and low combination. One pair of private cards can form the best high, while the other pair can be used for the low, but in both cases the rule "two from the hand plus three from the table" must be followed.

An example of pot splitting in Omaha Hi-Lo

Suppose the community cards are:

A♣ – 2♦ – 7♠ – K♥ – Q♣

Player A has A♦-K♠-3♣-4♦.

Player B has Q♦-Q♠-5♣-6♦.

For the high part, Player B can make a three of queens using Q♦ and Q♠ from the hand and Q♣ from the table. Player A, however, can use 3♣ and 4♦ along with A♣-2♦-7♠ to form a low 7-4-3-2-A.

If no other player has a better high or low, Player B wins half of the pot for the high and Player A wins half for the low.

What does "scoop" mean and why is it important?

One of the most important concepts in Hi-Lo poker is the "scoop". This means that the same player wins both the high and low part of the pot, i.e. Takes the entire pot.

This can happen in two ways. The first is that the player has the best high and the best low combination. The second is to have the best high hand, while no low hand qualifies.

That is why experienced players do not only look at the question "can I win half the pot?", but also "can I realistically win the whole pot?". Hands that have potential in both directions are usually more valuable than those that target only one half.

However, no starting hand guarantees a result. Poker involves randomness, the decisions of the opponent, and hand value changes as new cards are dealt.

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo uses the same basic pot-dealing principle, but the game structure is significantly different from Omaha.

There are no flops, turns and rivers as community cards. Each player can receive a total of seven own cards during the hand: some are closed and some are open and visible to other players. From these, the best five-card hand for the high and, if possible, the best qualified hand for the low is finally selected. PokerStars states that the best high wins half the pot and the best qualified low the other half; if low doesn't exist, high wins all.

In practice, this means that observing your opponent's open cards is extremely important. The player can see some information about what cards have already come out and what potential combinations the opponents can build.

The biggest difference compared to Omaha Hi-Lo is that there is no "exactly two privates and three community" rule, because there are no community cards in Stud.

Big O Hi-Lo and other Omaha variants

Big O is a version of Omaha where the player is dealt five private cards instead of four. When played as Hi-Lo, the basic logic remains the same: the pot can be split between a high and a low hand, and the hand is still made using exactly two privates and three community cards.

Related Omaha games can also exist with different betting structures. Omaha Hi-Lo, for example, can be played as Fixed Limit, Pot Limit or No Limit, where the basic rules for forming high and low hands remain the same, while the permitted bet sizes and raises change.

How is the pot split when there are multiple winners?

The simplest case is when one player gets high and the other gets low: each gets half the pot.

However, further division is also possible. If two players have the same best low hand, they share the low half. Then each gets a quarter of the total pot, while the high winner gets half.

The same applies when the high is tied. The rules of a particular poker room or tournament determine how any odd chips are distributed, so that detail should be checked before the game. In the PokerStars description of Stud Hi-Lo, for example, the odd chip in a high/low pot split goes to the high side.

The most common mistakes when learning Hi-Lo rules

Beginners often make mistakes because they try to apply the logic of ordinary poker to the low part of the game. In particular, the following should be avoided:

  • The assumption that every hand has a low winner. Low must meet the 8 or Better criteria if that format is used.
  • Misuse of tickets in Omaha. In Omaha Hi-Lo, exactly two privates and three community cards must be used.
  • Counting ace as a high card for a low. In the standard Ace-to-Five low system, the ace is low.
  • Adding the value of low cards. Low hands are not compared by sum, but from the highest card down.
  • Ignoring the possibility of a quarter pot. Two players can share one half of the pot.
  • Playing for low only. Winning half the pot is not the same as winning the whole pot, especially if there was a lot of betting.

How to learn Hi-Lo poker rules more easily?

The best approach is to learn the rules in layers. First you need to master the standard order of high poker hands. Then you need to learn how the Ace-to-Five low and the 8 or Better criterion work. Only then does it make sense to add special rules to a specific game, such as the mandatory use of two private cards in Omaha.

It is useful to remember three questions:

  1. What is my best possible high combo?
  2. Do I even have a qualified low?
  3. Can I win both parts of the pot or am I only fighting for half?

For beginners, it is especially useful to practice without a stake, because Hi-Lo requires simultaneous monitoring of two types of combinations. PokerStars, for example, lists the ability to play Omaha Hi-Lo at free tables as a way to get familiar with the format.

Is Hi-Lo harder than regular poker?

Hi-Lo is not necessarily "harder", but there is more information to follow. In a regular high-only game, the goal is to make the best standard hand. In the Hi-Lo format, the player simultaneously evaluates high potential, low potential and the possibility that the opponent targets the same half of the pot.

It is also necessary to distinguish between the rules of the game and the strategy. Knowing the rules makes it possible to correctly determine the winning hand, but it does not guarantee profit or eliminate the element of luck. If poker is played for money, the bet should be limited in advance to an amount whose loss does not affect the personal budget.

Hi-Lo poker is a game of two parallel combinations

The essence of Hi-Lo poker is that each pot can have two separate races: one for the best standard poker hand and one for the best qualifying low hand. When you understand the "8 or Better" rule, the system of comparing low combinations and the way to form a hand in a specific version, the game becomes much clearer.

The most important Hi-Lo poker rules differ in detail between Omaha and Seven Card Stud. In Omaha Hi-Lo the player uses exactly two private and three community cards, while in Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo the player chooses the best five from his own cards. In both cases, the low part usually requires five different cards from the eight down.

To begin with, it is enough to remember one idea: the goal is not always to take only one half of the pot. The strongest situation is "scoop" - when the same hand or the same player wins both the high and the low part. Once this is understood, Hi-Lo poker rules no longer act as two different games, but as one format in which each hand is viewed from two angles.
